“Never lose the twinkle in your eye,and the smile on your face..”

She is a phenomenal teacher who laid down the foundation for our medical career. She leaves no stone unturned when it comes to teaching us. Her pleasant smile and her warm demeanor makes her approachable to any student. Yes, it is our lovely Dr.Seema Madan Ma’am, H.O.D of Anatomy.

She was born and brought up in Hyderabad. She studied at NCI institute and gave her Osmania matric exam.

1. Motivation to be a doctor...

“My father motivated us and insisted us (my sister and me) on taking this noble profession. And never once did I feel I needed to pursue something else.”

2. School life..

Surprisingly, Ma’am was very reserved, probably the quietest student in class.  Ma’am tried recollecting funny incidents and came up with this- “When I was in my 2nd grade, I ran back home quite excited with my report card because I got 58/58 marks. Upon showing my parents they realised it was 58th rank in a class of 58 students.”

3. MBBS life...

Ma’am gave her entrance exam at Kakatiya University and got into KMC in the batch of 1974.

In first year she was ragged quite often since her telugu wasn’t fluent. She quoted one of these incidents- “I was repeatedly ragged by a senior Anjenelu and one day he asked me what his name was. I didn’t know, but I knew the ring of it- and said Manchi neelu and that got him very furious.”

Ma’am got married in 2nd year of MBBS and so couldn’t attend college regularly. Her Pathology professor, Dr. Veerabhadra Rao announced in the class that he has something grave to announce about Seema Madan Ma’am,” She unfortunately got only 17% attendance but the upside to the story is that she attained 71% in Pathology.”

“On my first day of  clinical postings I was disgusted by the unhygienic conditions of the hospital. The bed next to the patient whom we were examining was very unclean and I dreaded going close to that bed. I fainted and to my dismay I found myself lying on the same unclean bed upon regaining my consciousness”.

Ma’am also played Cupid between her senior and her roommate, who are now happily married.

4. About Post graduation..

Ma’am did her post graduation in Anatomy at GMC. Her mentor and idol was Dr. Lily Ebenezer who guided her all throughout and pushed her to pursue a diploma in Sports Medicine at Patiala. Ma’am now feels honored and privileged to have her name on the same board as her mentor, as the H.O.D of Anatomy

“There was a lot of terrorist attacks at Patiala . One such incident which shook me was witnessing two people being shot dead before my eyes while I was on a morning walk with my son. I could never erase the memories of that incident.”

5.Hobbies and other interests...

Ma’am was a - district level Badminton player

                         - trained kathak dancer for 5 years

                        - Good at embroidery, every year Ma’am would design a saree for her mother but                                           since her internship Ma’am started designing a saree for herself every year.

                        - Good at playing sitar

                        - Ma’am is very fond of cooking and loves experimenting.

6.  Difference in students then and now?

“ Students these days are more focused. They are more intelligent. They know what they want to do in life.”

7.Most memorable moments in career?

“The times when my old  students come upto me and recognize me. There was this time when a person came running down the hall in Chicago where I was attending my son’s graduation and he introduced himself to be my ex-student. He could even recollect that I taught him peritoneal reflections. I was touched by that sweet gesture.”

8.What is her idea about role model teacher?

A teacher should put herself in the shoes of a student, they should get their concepts right and explain it to students in various possible ways by coming down to their level.

9. Association with Gandhi..

-Madame's grandfather Col. K.N.Waghray who was the Director of Health, established Gandhi Medical college in 1954. (Then called- People’s Medical College)

-All her accomplishments were at Gandhi, right from her internship to PG to being the H.O.D of Anatomy.

-Her sister, son and daughter-in-law are all graduates from Gandhi Medical College. Presently Ma’am’s son is practicing Pulmonary Critical Care at Indiana.

“Such deep and profound memories are associated with my 30 years of teaching at Gandhi. Gandhi is home and it saddens me that I’m retiring next year.”

10. Carry home message for students….

Never take anything ‘seriously’ because seriousness is a negative energy. Do whatever you do with sincerity. Replace ‘seriousness’ with ‘sincerity’ in your dictionary. Never lose the twinkle in your eye and the smile on your face.

Lead a wholesome life. Give enough time for each and every aspect of your life and              spend quality time with your family as and when possible.

It was a priviledge interviewing Ma'am.We are thankful to Ma'am for giving us some time of her busy schedule and sharing her beautiful memories with us.
